About 46% of men in England and 32% of women are overweight (a body mass index of 25-30 kg/m2), and an additional 17% of men and 21% of women are obese (a body mass index of more than 30 kg/m2). The percentage of adults who are obese has roughly doubled since the mid-1980's.

The prevalence of obesity increases with age throughout childhood. In 1996, around 13% of 8 year olds and 17% of 15 year olds in England were obese. These levels of childhood obesity are likely to exacerbate the trend towards increased overweight and obesity in the adult population: compared to children of normal weight, obese children have a two-fold increase in the risk of becoming overweight adults.

As per the statistics, obesity has become a serious issue in the UK. The more over-weight a person is, the more likely he or she is to develop health problems such as increased risk of heart disease; high blood pressure; stroke; atherosclerosis, or narrowing of the arteries; Type II diabetes; arthritis and cancer.

Many patients present themselves to me with weight loss as their main complaint. Some come in with preconceptions about how Acupuncture is used to treat weight loss. They assume that Acupuncture is a quick fix solution. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for weight loss, no magic Acupuncture point that will dissolve the pounds. Some people prefer a complete overhaul and others find this very daunting. Even the smallest change can sometimes be the most significant.

The good news is that a holistic approach to weight loss, including Acupuncture, diet and exercise is very successful. Many patients lose an average of 10% body weight in 2-3 months. But first, you have to become committed to making changes in lifestyle, and, during our treatment sessions, I’ll counsel you and provide you with one on one support on making and maintaining these changes.

Eating is the most fundamental means that we have toward a healthy body (and mind). People looking for the next solution to their dissatisfaction with body size or health, turn to the latest scientific phenomenon in the hope of finally achieving their dietary goals. For some there is incredible success, but for others there is abject failure and frustration. Why should there be differences in the effects of this diet when the research and data suggest that success is a guarantee? How can a diet be right for some and not for others? Why? Because quite simply we are unique, and most times a “one size fits all” approach does not work.

Recognition of the differences in constitution or physiological patterning is one of the defining characteristics of Chinese medicine. Recognising that all people are not going to respond similarly to a given diet or food type is the invaluable asset to discerning what choices would best suite a patient’s needs. I observe each individual’s constitution and respond to these signs appropriately. Standing firmly upon the foundation of sound scientific research, with the accumulated experience of Chinese medical diagnostics and the related implementation of food types, I am in a good position to deliver excellent care to my patients.

Through Acupuncture, I can help deal with the underlying causes. Acupuncture can increase circulation throughout the body which helps remove waste. It helps reduce cravings and increases energy. Through Nutritional Coaching I can help you establish an eating plan that will be consistent with your particular needs. I will help educate you on quality balanced food, cooking methods and food combinations. Increased energy through Acupuncture and balanced diet will help you want to move your body and be active which in turn will help support your weight loss. I can provide motivational Exercise coaching to support your weight loss, only working within your capabilities. Together we will increase your strength, flexibility, energy levels, immune system and sense of well-being.
